62nd Republic Day celebrated in Shanghai

 

The 62nd Republic Day was celebrated at the Consulate General of India, Shanghai this morning with great joy and patriotic fervour.

Consul General of India Mrs Riva Ganguly Das hoisted the National Flag and read out excerpts from President’s message to members of the Indian community. Also present were Indian medical students from Suzhou and Nantong (Jiangsu province). Despite being a working day and freezing temperature, a large number of people from the Indian Community were present at the flag hoisting.

‘Sangeetam’ a musical group under the Indian Association rendered patriotic songs on the occasion. An informal gathering over light refreshments followed. 

In the evening, a reception was held at the Renaissance Putuo Hotel, Shanghai. Vice Mayor of Shanghai Ms Zhao Wen was the Chief Guest. A number of municipal leaders and senior government officials from Shanghai, Jiangsu and Zhejiang attended the reception. Besides them, local dignitaries, academics, businessmen, media persons and prominent Indians from Shanghai, Jiangsu and Zhejiang as well as members of the Consular corps also attended the reception.

Consul General addressed the gathering.  A colourful and attractive Rangoli   made by the members of the Indian community. Ms. Sumelika Bhattacharya, an Indian student, gave a short Odissi dance performance giving the evening a unique Indian flavour. Tourism related ‘Incredible India’ films and IBEF films were screened during the reception. More than 250 people attended the reception.
