Exploring opportunities for India-China cooperation in the Auto Components Sector

 

The Consulate General of India, Shanghai organized a Seminar and a Buyer-Seller Meet (BSM) in Shanghai on March 11, 2011, on the occasion of the visit of a CEO-level delegation of auto component manufacturers under the aegis of the Auto Component Manufacturers Association (ACMA). The 13-member CEO’s delegation was headed by ACMA President Mr. Srivats Ram.

The Seminar and BSM which was attended by a total of 60 companies, was organized by the Consulate and the Shanghai Federation of Industrial Economics. Consul General Ms. Riva Ganguly Das in her remarks said that India’s auto component sector which is becoming the preferred destination for original equipment manufacturers can find business opportunities in China. Consul General also mentioned that Government of India’s ten year Automotive Mission plans to quadruple the industry’s turn over and increase exports to US$ 35 billion by 2016. Vice Executive President of Shanghai Federation of Industrial Economics Mr. Jiang Guangyu in his remarks said that China was the world’s fastest growing automobile market with sales in 2010 reaching 18.6 million units. He said that the size of the auto market in China offers great potential for Indian Ancillary companies to do business with China and particularly Shanghai. 

ACMA President Mr. Srivats Ram in his remarks said that the objective of the Auto Mission to China was to project and showcase the strength and growing capabilities of the Indian component industry. At the same time the Indian delegation sought to understand as to how China created an eco-system to become the largest automotive market in a relatively short period of time. Other speakers at the seminar included Mr. Yang Dejun, Secretary General of Shanghai Automotive Industry Association (SAIA) and Mr. Richard Cant, Director at the consultancy firm, Dezan Shira & Associates, Shanghai. 

While in Shanghai, the ACMA delegation visited the facilities of China’s largest automobile manufacturer - Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC), the International Auto City in Shanghai and the manufacturing facilities of Fuyao Group (manufacturer of car wind shields) and Faurecia Group (a MNC manufacturer of car seats).
