Consulate General of India, Shanghai organized an evening of Indian dance performance 'Saptakam' on July 13, 2014 by Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi. The 20-member troupe led by choreographer Ms Madhavi Mudgal mesemerized the audience by its performance. Through a subtle and dynamic interplay of forms which dissolve into one another, Saptakam presented before the viewers seven Indian classical dance forms in a single performance. Playing upon the relation between forms and the formless, the show group showcased the Bharatanatyam of southern India, a dance nurtured in temples and royal courts; the Manipuri dance of north-eastern India, grown out of ritual worship of Krishna; the Odissi dance of eastern India recapturing forms of medieval statuary; the Kathakali of southernmost India evoking primordial passion through its enactment of myth; the sparkling Kathak dance of northern India captivating with its footwork and pirouettes; the serene Sattriya dance of the Vaishnava monasteries of the North-east; and the Kuchipudi dance of South India blending folk tradition of drama with its classical grammar. Each of these dance forms came alive in Saptakam making space for the other as the choreography unfolded through its successive movements. Sangeet Natak Akademi is India's first National Academy for music, dance and drama. It is the apex body for performing arts in the country tasked with preserving and promoting the vast intangible heritage of India's diverse culture expressed in the forms of music, dance and drama.
