Celebration of 550th Birth Anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji

 

The Consulate General of India, Shanghai in collaboration with the local Sikh community celebrated the 550th Birth Anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji in the Consulate conference hall on 9th November, 2019. An 8-member troupe led by Bhai Onkar Singh Ji and Bhai Jasbir Singh Ji, sponsored by the local Sikh community, sang sacred Shabads in the Kirtan Diwan. 

2. The Kirtan Diwan was preceded by an inaugural speech by the Consul General, and a presentation informing about the various activities undertaken by the Sikh community to celebrate the auspicious occasion. In his address, the Consul General highlighted the teachings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji and the steps undertaken by the Government of India for the welfare of Sikh community including the opening of the Kartarpur Corridor. 

3. The Consul General also donated books on Sikhism titled ‘Guru Granth Sahib – The Sikh Scripture’; ‘A History of Sikhs (Vol I & II)’; ‘Sikhism’; ‘The First Anglo-Sikh War’; ‘Walking with Nanak’; & ‘Read & Shine – Sikhism’ to Shanghai Gurudwara, the Central Library of Shanghai University and Members of Sikh community. During the event, an art and literature corner was also created in the Conference Hall displaying books on Sikhism and paintings by children on the theme ‘550th Birth Anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji’. The Kirtan Diwan was followed by a Langar. The event saw a healthy participation of more than 80 people including Chinese citizens.
