Nanjing @ Colours of India - 25 May 2017 – Nanjing Municipal People’s theater – 2300 locals rejoice with Charishnu and Bollywood Dreams dance performances

          As part of the ongoing ‘Colours of India’ cultural dance performance series, a gala performance was held in Nanjing at the Nanjing People’s Theater on 25 May 2017. The two hour long program showcased both Indian classical and Bollywood dance performance to bring the unique and vibrant flavor of India to local audience. The classical dance performance titled ‘Charishnu’ was led by Ms Leela Samson and Bollywood performance was organized by Teamwork Arts. The troupe was sponsored by Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), which is India’s premier agency for promoting cultural exchanges abroad.  

2.   The performance in Nanjing was part of India Culture week titled “Colors of India Festival” held from May 22-26, 2017. The event was organized in pursuance of an agreement between China Federation of Literary and Art Circles (CFLAC) and Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) about enhancing cultural exchanges between India and China. The cultural bonanza on 25th May evening at Nanjing was jointly organized by Consulate General of India in Shanghai and Jiangsu Foreign Literary Arts Circle. The program held at the prestigious Nanjing People's theatre was attended by nearly 2300 local Nanjing residents in presence of President of JFLAC Mr. Zhang Jianhua and Consul General Prakash Gupta.  

3.   Earlier performances of the visiting dance troupe sponsored by ICCR in the Eastern China region included the inaugural performance at the opening of the India Week in Suqian (Jiangsu) on 23 May and another gala performance at the Wuxi’s Lingshan Dao Buddhist Temple on 26 May evening. 

Introduction to the Dance Performances: 

Charishnu is a spectacular dance and music presentation that offers a glimpse of the diversity and richness of India’s performing arts. It includes a selection of the classical, folk and martial dance forms from India. The wonderfully complex art of percussion is also presented through an ensemble of drums from different parts of India. This production is conceived and directed by Ms. Leela Samson, one of India’s illustrious dancers. She is a teacher, writer and choreographer of Bharatnatyam.  

Teamwork Arts is a highly versatile production company with roots in the performing arts, social action and the corporate world. The group would be showcasing the musical extravaganza, Bollywood Love Story - which continues to tour the world and has sold out shows in Austria, Germany, Netherlands, South Africa, Spain and Switzerland.
