“Indian Food Festival celebrated in Shanghai”

Consulate General of India in Shanghai along with the Shanghai Women’s Federation organized an “Indian Food Festival” at one of the finest Indian restaurants –‘The Tandoor’ in Shanghai in the afternoon of 29th December. The event was aimed to showcase the best of Indian cuisine to members of the SWF and local media.

Shanghai Women’s Federation, has been one of the preferred partners of the Indian Consulate in Shanghai, and has played a pivotal role in promoting bilateral cultural and people to people exchanges. Earlier this year, a high level delegation led by the Indian Minister of State for Women and Child Development had visited Shanghai at the invitation of the SWF, and a series of initiatives were discussed to promote further exchanges between women from both sides. A delegation from the SWF is likely to visit India next year.

Speaking  at the inaugural ceremony, Madame Zhang Lili, Chairperson of SWF, termed the initiative as a significant step in forging closer cultural linkages between the two countries. Flagging off the event, Consul General of India in Shanghai, Mrs. Riva Ganguly Das, expressed the hope that the event would open a window to the vast culinary experience of Incredible India. The event was attended by nearly 100 members of the SWF, local media, and representatives from the Consular corps and officials of the Shanghai People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries.

To mark the occasion, a comprehensive bilingual directory of Indian Restaurants in Shanghai and the Eastern China region was also released. The bilingual directory with complete contact particulars and locations of more than two dozen Indian restaurants marked against a map of Shanghai is intended to serve as a handy guide for visitors and local Shanghainese who would like to explore Indian cuisine and its flavours.

Besides offering the best in Indian cuisine, the evening also showcased a series of cultural performances including a Kathak dance performance by Indian artist Mrs.  Swetleena Mohapatra, an instrumental duet on the Sitar and Tabla, an entertaining Bollywood dance performance by the Indian children’s group and a rendition of the popular song “Awaara Hoon. An introduction to the various varieties of Indian food along with a demonstration the making of popular Indian bread “fei bing”,  was also organized.  Jet Airways, India’s largest private sector airlines, and one of the co-sponsors of the Event, besides the Tandoor Restaurant, provided a complementary return ticket on Shanghai Mumbai Shanghai sector through a lucky draw.
