A nation-wide effort was started in India on Gandhi Jayanti 2^nd October, 2014 to mobilize resources for improving sanitation facilities in the rural and urban areas, particularly, school premises. In this regard, Swachh Bharat Kosh (SBK) has been set up to facilitate channelization of philanthropic contributions, Corporate Social Responsibility Funds and contribution by NRI/PIOs in response to the call given by Hon'ble Prime Minister on 15^th August, 2014 to achieve the objective of Clean India (Swachh Bharat) by the year 2019, the 150^th year of the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

The following broad activities will be financed from the SBK:

Construction, renovation, or repair of community/ individual toilets in rural areas, urban areas, in elementary, secondary and senior secondary government schools, and aanganwaadis (Centres that provide support to children below 6 years and their mothers under the Integrated Child Development Scheme, Ministry of Women and Child Development);

Construction activity for water supply to the toilets;

Training and skill development to facilitate maintenance of the toilets and to ensure its inter-linkages with education on hygiene;

Other initiatives for improving sanitation and cleanliness in rural and urban areas including solid and liquid waste management;

Any other activity to improve sanitation in the country as decided by the Governing Council.
