Meeting of MOS (I/C) Commerce and Industry of India with Minister of Commerce, PRC on sidelines of 7th BRICS Trade Ministers Meeting (1st August 2017, Shanghai) 

Minister of State (I/C) of Commerce and Industry H.E. Mrs. Nirmala Sitharaman met the Chinese Minister of Commerce H.E. Mr. Zhong Shan, on the sidelines of the 7th BRICS Trade Ministers' meeting in Shanghai on 1st August 2017. This meeting comes after their first meeting on the sidelines of RCEP Ministerial meeting in Hanoi, Vietnam in May 2017.

2.Both Ministers underscored the existing complementarities between the fastest growing large economies of India and China and agreed to further intensify efforts to realize the full potential of their mutually beneficial cooperation. They exchanged views, in a candid manner, on further development of a strong, balanced and sustainable trade and investment partnership between India and China. In particular, Minister Sitharaman sought the assistance of Chinese Ministry of Commerce in reducing the trade deficit, facilitating greater market access and for providing a level playing field for Indian IT, pharmaceuticals and agro products in China.

3.The Ministers also agreed to further intensify India-China cooperation in the plurilateral and multilateral frameworks such as WTO, BRICS, SCO etc.

4.Minister Sitharaman reiterated her invitation to Minister Zhong Shan to visit India for the 11th Joint Economic Group (JEG) at the earliest. Minister Zhong Shan accepted the invitation with pleasure and suggested that the dates for the 11th JEG meeting be decided through the diplomatic channels, whilst indicating that it could be held later this year.
